I hope that you will join me in praying for these Poor Souls in Purgatory. This page was made to share the plight of the Souls in Purgatory and to offer some resources for you to help alleviate their suffering. I have always felt an attachment to these suffering souls. We are called to perform this act of Charity. We not only pray for the souls of those we knew but for the souls forgotten and for the souls who have no one to pray for them. These prayers for the wretched souls please God. Then as they attain heaven, they pray for us. Since the poor souls cannot help themselves, we are called to pray and sacrifice for them to reach this purification quickly so they can be with God in heaven. The souls in purgatory’s sins have been forgiven, but because they still have an attachment to sin, they must be purified before their soul can enjoy the glory of God in heaven. We pray for the souls of the faithful departed, especially those whom we have known and loved this month. Even in the Old Testament prayers and alms were offered for the souls of the dead by those who thought “well and religiously concerning the resurrection.” It was believed that “they who had fallen asleep with godliness had great grace laid up for them” and that “it is, therefore, a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.” We know that a defiled soul cannot enter into heaven.Įxcerpted from Liturgical Meditations, The Sisters of St. The Church has always taught us to pray for those who have gone into eternity. Paul warns us that we must not be ignorant concerning the dead, nor sorrowful, “even as others who have no hope … For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven … and the dead who are in Christ shall rise. The Church commemorates all her faithful children who have departed from this life but have not yet attained the joys of heaven. The month of November is dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
